If you love flowers, Germany truly has something to offer for every season. There is tulip picking in the Spring, endless poppy fields in the Summer and even pumpkin festivals in the Fall. Right before spooky season starts, however, there is one wonderful season people forget about… sunflower season!
When Do Sunflowers Bloom?
In Germany, sunflower fields usually start to pop up around mid July. Blooms will last through most of August, but I recommend visiting during the first two weeks of August.
Where to Find Sunflowers?
My absolute favorite sunflower field can be found about 1.5 hours from Wiesbaden. The sunflowers here are breathtaking and well worth the drive in my opinion.

Parking
There are a few options for parking based on how far you want to walk.
Your first option is to park in the town of Miesau. I drove through this town on my way to the fields and it had a lot of street parking available on side roads. The walk from Miesau to the fields is only 10 minutes and it is fairly flat.
Personally, I utilized the street parking in a neighborhood just next to the fields. If you choose to park here too, please be mindful that you do not park in front of anyone’s driveway/gate.
Please Note: There is a small (one lane) road that leads past the sunflower fields, but you cannot park there.
Are Dogs Allowed?
Yes! Just be sure they do not enter the crops and that you clean up after them (don’t forget to bring poop bags).
Tip: I would recommend keeping your dog on leash as there are lots of bees they could accidentally catch, field mice they may chase and horses that they might startle.
Giant Sunflowers
Probably my favorite part of this trip was seeing the different sizes of sunflowers. Some were small, but others were twice the size of my head! No, I’m not exaggerating.
This is me standing next to some of the shorter sunflowers. I’m 5’2″ which means these flowers are well over 6 feet tall!
Sunflower Seeds
We’ve all seen sunflower seeds in the store, but have you seen them in the actual plant? Look for a sunflower with wilting petals (It will appear shriveled). In the center of the flower, there are small yellow disk florets which cover the seeds. When these florets have fallen, they will reveal the black sunflower seeds.
Please Note: The sunflowers are crops and are privately owned. You cannot take any of the sunflowers or sunflower seeds home.
Endless Fields
The fields are absolutely massive! To be surrounded by flowers, you want to follow this grassy path which leads between two of the large fields.
I recommend walking the paths around the entire perimeter to find ideal picture spots.
Bees

As this is a flower field, there are lots of bees (I actually had quite a few fly straight into my face). The bees are generally friendly, but please watch to be sure your dog or child does not get stung.
If you are allergic to bees or wasps, I recommend bringing your life saving medication just in case you are stung (Have the nearest Emergency Department saved to your GPS/Phone).
Dogs may also try to catch and/or eat a bee (which can be life threatening). I recommend saving the nearest emergency vet to your GPS/phone before visiting.
What to Wear
Sunflower pictures are some of my favorites. If you intend to take pictures, you don’t want an outfit that clashes with the scenery. Popular outfit themes are:
- Neutrals (Green tones and/or Tan)
- White (Solid white outfits or a white shirt with khakis are best for this theme)
- Blue (I prefer light blue to navy for sunflower photos as this tends to pop more)
- Yellow (This is great for helping your little ones stand out against the green sunflower stalks)
Tip: If you have a dog, order them a matching bowtie like the one Jasper wears! Our favorite bow shop is PawTies (Use JASPER10 to save 10%).
Explore the Town
If you have time, I recommend strolling through the town for a bit. There is a quaint church, a few parks and the locals are friendly. As there is a military installation nearby, you may even see a few U.S. soldiers.
Hungry after your explorations? There is a doner restaurant and a pizza place that both offer food to go (I have not tried these restaurants and cannot vouch if they are good or bad).

Looking for Something local?
There are quite a few local sunflower fields in Wiesbaden. The sunflowers, however, are not as large as the ones in the fields discussed above. Personally, I would still recommend hiking to see them if you are in the area!
Stroll through the fields behind Crestview and you will stumble upon various patches of sunflowers. This one is probably the largest.
