Dog-friendly food tour?🐾 SIGN US UP!

While traveling we always try our best to take either a cooking class or food tour wherever we go.

Why?

Food = Community + Culture 👩‍🍳

Food Tours & cooking classes can teach you SO much about the area you are visiting - you can learn why certain ingredients are prominent in local recipes, the history of your favorite food/drinks, taste test regional flavor combinations, etc.

When we found out that @louisvillefoodtours had a dog-friendly tour during our recent trip to Kentucky, we were stoked! 🐶

IYKYK finding dog-friendly FOOD tours in the USA isn't always the easiest.

((Where my fellow dog travelers at? 🙋‍♀️ You know the struggle.))

We left this tour stuffed to the brim with food, drinks and history!

Parke County Covered Bridge Festival is the larges

Parke County Covered Bridge Festival is the largest festival in Indiana... 🍁🍂

And it is INCREDIBLY dog friendly!

This was our first visit to Indiana & I can wholeheartedly say that the Covered Bridge Festival needs to go on your bucket list!

It takes place in 9 cities across Parke County, Indiana & each location has something unique to offer:

🍁 Shuck your own popcorn kernels with a hand crank in Bloomingdale! Indiana is the birthplace of popcorn master, Orville Redenbacher, so you gotta try it.
🍁 Drive through picturesque covered bridges surrounded by colorful Fall leaves - a must when visiting the covered bridge capital of the world!
🍁 Head to Tangier & try their buried beef sandwiches - they literally BURY the beef to cook it, just like in the old days!
🍁 Order freshly ground grits from the Bridgeton Mill - you can watch them grind grits and flour right infront of you!
🍁 Participate in the rubber duckie race in Mecca - The goal is to have your 🦆 reach the finishline first!
🍁 Try the state pie of Indiana - Sugar Cream Pie - It's delicious.
🍁 Thrift and antique shop until you drop - there are 100s of yard sales & vintage shops in/around the Festival. We stopped by DOZENS on the way to each market.
🍁 Take a tractor ride through old Billie Creek Village and say hello to their resident goats + horses.
🍁 Have fresh, hand pressed cider and homemade corn fritters with cinnamon butter in Rockville.
🍁 Watch live wood carving in Mansfield, but don't forget to grab a persimmon pudding too!
🍁 Snag a Crueller while thrifting in Montezuma - then head to Rosedale for covered bridges & handmade quilts.

Most importantly: Enjoy the day with your pup 🐕

The only spots dogs cannot enter = inside the mills, Tangier's food hall & 1 of Rockville's tents.🎪 Everything else is easily accessible with a dog - we met tons at each location 🐾

Visiting Kentucky and looking for a dog-friendly hotel? 🐾

This week we're exploring all the dog-friendly activities Louisville has to offer... which means we need an equally dog-friendly hotel. 🐕

@seelbachhiltonhotel is the PERFECT stay for us:

💙 Steeped in history, the hotel sits atop an array of secret tunnels used by gangsters in the 1920s to evade 🚔
💙 The rooms are quiet, filled with lush bedding and are incredibly spacious - ideal when traveling with a large dog like us!
💙 Their Rathskeller is covered floor to ceiling in Rookwood-Pottery and it is absolutely STUNNING. It's the ONLY surviving room like it in the world and by being a guest, you have the best chance to view it. Their 10,000 💰 Rookwood clock is probably my favorite feature!
💙 Heard of Al Capone? The hotel's Oakroom was a favorite hangout of his.
💙 Grab a drink at their Seelbach Bar - it's rated as one of the top 50 bars in the world! We enjoyed dinner & our first Bourbon trail drink here (as they have 150+ Bourbons).
💙 Major attractions, such as the slugger museum, are an easy walk.
💙 Parking is spacious and right next door - you can opt for a multi entry parking option if you have day trips planned.
💙While the Seelbach has hosted 9 U.S. presidents, it's most unique guest is "The Lady in Blue" - aka the hotel's resident 👻

My service dog, Jasper, changed my entire life for the better.

Growing up, I always had health issues that were brushed off as me being "dramatic."

Sound familiar to my chronically ill peeps?🙋‍♀️

I grew up incredibly ashamed and embarrassed of my symptoms - hiding them as best I could - as I had no idea WHAT was wrong with me.

After years of masking the issues - my body gave up and I spent over a year in/out of hospitals racking up diagnosis I had convinced myself were something I could "push through & ignore."

I had just graduated nursing school and was thrust into BEING a patient while also learning how to BE a nurse.

I was overwhelmed.

My husband was deployed, I had recieved what felt like endless diagnosis, struggled to figure out a new work/life balance & had just moved away from everyone/everything I knew to an unfamiliar state.

Amidst that chaos came Jasper.

He took to service dog training like a natural and as he progressed, so did my quality of life.

I started to be able to do the things I loved again - confidently. Every day I gained more and more independence back.

Service dogs are lifesavers and life changers.

No, they don't cure our disabilities. The do, however, aid in mitigating them by providing beneficial tasks to improve our quality of life.

One of our bucket list items when moving to Europe

One of our bucket list items when moving to Europe was finding a dog-friendly castle hotel that wouldn't break the bank and still had an old timey feel 🏰

With living in Germany, you would think we found TONS of castle hotel options - HOWEVER we always ran into 2 issues:

1. The castle hotel was STUNNING, but it didn't allow dogs overnight 🚫

OR

2. The rooms were renovated in a modern style and truly lacked the CASTLE feel we wanted 🐾 (or was outside our desired budget)

Then we found Jaunpils Castle in Latvia 🇱🇻

🏰 Beautifully decorated rooms that kept the charm we were seeking AND had modern amenities (without looking like a cookie cutter hotel room).
🏰 On site dining with live music, traditional Latvian meals and all lit by candlelight.
🏰 Family Friendly Excursions & Tours, such as archery.
🏰 Walking distance from local farms where you can purchase smoked cheese snacks and probably some of the best ice cream we've ever had.
🏰 Amazing staff that were not only welcoming, but went out of their way to make sure we did not miss out on anything in the area (including their delicious Carmel candies and wine).
🏰 Complimentary + easy parking
🏰 Dog-friendly hotel rooms

I'm so happy we decided to celebrate Jasper's adoption birthday 🎂 at @jaunpilspils they made it a truly memorable bark-day for him.

After 5 years living abroad in Germany and traveli

After 5 years living abroad in Germany and traveling all of Europe.... we moved to DALLAS! 🤠

This move has been such a whirlwind! We had ~ a months notice to get a new home across the world, ship our car to 🇺🇲, secure seats on a flight, schedule our HHG, move out of our Germany apt, etc.

Then add on the unexpected ~23 hr drive from Maryland 🚗 Texas because our 1st flight arrived late... yeah, it's been an adventure for sure 😂

We're so excited for Dallas/DFW area to be our new home for a little while because we're starting a whole new adventure 🐾

When we moved abroad to Europe, our goal was to visit EVERY single country in Europe with Jasper 🐕 via dog-friendly trains/busses/ferries/cruises and WE DID IT!!

We've always lived by the "grow where you're planted" philosophy - which leads us to our next big adventure - visiting all 50 states & as many National Parks as possible 🇺🇲🐾

We LOVE seeing places we travel from the perspective of locals - so tell us what we should do in YOUR state!

What's the "must try" food? 🍔 Is there an attraction we shouldn't miss? 📸 Best season? 🍁 Number one "must do"? 🚣‍♀️ Famous Festivals? 🎆 Best Dog-friendly activities? 🐕
